Bottle Collection Project

A large component of the class was to devise and carry out a class service project.  The students were responsible for the majority of the work involved. Here are their reflection writings.

On October, 2011, we planned a project together in service learning class. We decided to collect refundable bottles for one month, from them we made money, and we donated it to Soup Kitchen.
First of all, we made five paper boxes, put them in the five different places (Bishop Center, Library, Co-op, Student Union, Gymnasium), and each student was responsible for one place. Every week we checked them, and we collected bottles together in Bishop Center. After that, we took them to Big Y to get the slips from the recycling machine. For one month, we collected about 600 bottles, so we made about $30. Although $30 is not much money, all of us made an effort to collect bottles, and I think it was worth doing it. Sometimes it was a little bit work, but it was very valuable experience in my life.

My experience on collection bottles is useful to work for somebody on the ather side. It is good to feel responsibility for someone and it is worth it to work to group for one goal. I met people from  UCONN and I explained to them our project. it is good opportunity to talk with people. The result of the project is feeling to responsibility, make up more friends, and chance to talk more with native speaker. It is nice to learn more about helping people. My part of this project was successes. I was collecting the bottles from the Gym. there are many bottles. people  donat  and they understand the project. I think if there are more time and places. we can collect more then we have. I learned from this project responsibility, work to other people. I felt happy when I saw my box full.

Our class decided to collect plastic bottles as a project for our Serves Learning class. We choose this project by voting for it. Every student in the class gives a short presentation about an idea for our project and then we voted for the best one. Our project is basically is to collect the returnable plastic bottles for the $.05 fee and donate the money to a local Covenant Soup Kitchen.

For about one month, we collected refundable bottles. Before we did, we expected that we could collect bottles a lot, so we could collect much money. However, it was not easy to make much money for donation.

I think this kind of campaign is new concept for everyone. We needed to announce to every class in UCAELI. We sent announcement email to UCAELI students, staffs and officers who are working at Bishop center. One of officers brought a bag of cans. We were supposed to that, but that day power was gone, so we couldnt. If we try to announce everyone of UCAELI and UCONNs students, we could collect a lot of money for that. Because, it can make many people participate easily. Most people just throw their bottles after they drunk. Money which we collected is not much, but we tried to involve many people in this project. We put boxes at UCONN campus, so people could put their bottles easily. Actually, money is not first thing, we could recycle over than 600 bottles, and we learned something from this project. We put much effort in this project. We made boxes to collect bottles, collected bottles every week, and refunded them. I think this is most important. If our group would large, this project could be easier or, we would this project for long time, we definitely collect big money.

I learned many things from this project. First of all, it is not easy to make money. We could just fundraising, but we wanted to fulfill two goals. To recycle refundable bottles, and to donate for homeless people, we did this project. Before we started this project, I heard how homeless people make money; they usually make money by collecting bottles all day. Just five cents by one bottle, they need to look over all the street for their meal. Through this project, I can understand them more than before. For example, how they can survive on the street without any jobs. Also, we refunded all the bottles to recycle. We did this project for environment. I think so our project is very meaningful for that reasons.

First of all I will talk about bottle collection project;  we started collect bottles month ago. Our goal was collecting bottles deposit and recycle the bottles at same time. Then, donate money to soup kitchen.

Some of you may  ask what is benefit of this project ? is it successful  or not? and what I learned from this project. In fact, it was a new experience for me. I can say I learned a lot.

First, I learned how I can work with group, and how to manage the project . Second, most of you know how  collecting money is  difficult. So, I should  be patient with collection money . Third,  I learned how I can help  the community from a little things . also, I met new people in the community, and I connect with them.  In addition, I learned new skills for example, I find out the method for change the bottles.

Maybe some of you say it was  successful and others  don't.  I agree with all of you .

It is not successful according to  what we collected. It was $25 in a month, but it is successful depending on what we learned . absolutely  we learn a lot.

I think this kind of projects is need community contribute in it. So, next time we should change the methods of announcement and the ways of bottles collection.
